New Study Shows the Surprising Power of Wikipedia in Science
A study of Wikipedia’s impact on scientific literature revealed a surprising truth about scientists’ language usage in published journals and their similarities with the language found on Wikipedia pages about scientific topics.
"Our research shows that scientists are using Wikipedia and that it is influencing how they write about the science that they are doing," says Thompson. "Wikipedia isn't just a record of what's going on in science, it's actually helping to shape science." One in every three-hundred words is being shaped by language on Wikipedia pages, this is particularly true for developing nations whether encyclopedic information is harder to come by.
